Ayurvedic Treatment for Hypertensive Nephropathy

We at Dr Dassan’s Ayurveda, focus on the underlying cause of Chronic kidney disease i.e mainly blood pressure and diabetes. Additionally, the underlying dosha is balanced with appropriate diet and lifestyle changes. We provide patients with ayurvedic medicines that include natural herbs like gokhru, punarnava, kasini, varuna etc that have a nourishing effect on the nephrons and are also diuretic in nature. By this we achieve our main objective of rejuvenating the nephrons. This in turn improves the renal filtration and kidney functioning. Our goal is to increase blood flow and flush toxins from the body through urine. We have seen a significant increase in kidney function and urine production during the course of our treatment. We have prevented the need for dialysis in patients who haven't yet started with it and reduced the dependency on dialysis in patients who were already needing it. Moreover, patients have seen an improvement in tests such as those of serum creatinine, blood urine nitrogen, urine analysis etc.

About Hypertensive Nephropathy

Long term uncontrolled hypertension can cause severe damage to the glomeruli (blood vessels that filter out waste) causing the deterioration of kidney function. In Ayurveda, it is correlated with disorders of mutra vaha srotas which are the urine carrying channels.

Risk Factors of Hypertensive Nephropathy

  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Older age
  • Smoking
  • Genetics

Symptoms of Hypertensive Nephropathy

  • Worsening high blood pressure
  • Decrease in amount of urine or difficulty urinating
  • Edema due to fluid retention, especially in lower legs
  • Constant fatigue and weakness
  • Frothy urine due to protein leakage
  • Experiencing nausea, vomiting and muscular cramps.
  • Shortness of breath and chest pain in severe cases

Ayurvedic Causative Fact

  • Heavy usage of drugs like corticosteroids.
  • Mansik doshas like fear, anger, stress, grief etc
  • Chronic indigestion
  • Excessive food intake
  • Incompatible food combinations
  • Habitual alcohol intake
  • Suppressing the natural urge to urinate
  • Excessive physical exertion
  • Staying up late at night
  • Excessive intake of fish & meat
  • Intake of food before the previous meal is digested

Ayurvedic Pathogenesis

Chronic hypertension over time causes damage to the glomeruli in the kidneys due to aggravated tridosha. This leads to disturbance in the urinary channels called the mutravaha srotas causing insufficient urine production over the time due to damaged nephrons.

Faq's
  • Q. Why do hypertensive kidney diseases occur?

Ans. High blood pressure is referred to as hypertension, whereas nephropathy is referred to as deterioration of kidney functionality. Thus, this syndrome develops when small blood arteries, glomeruli, kidney tubules, and interstitial tissues in the kidneys sustain damage from chronically high blood pressure. Nephrosclerosis(progressive kidney damage) is eventually caused by the tissue's eventual hardening and thickening.

  • Q. How are the kidneys affected by high blood pressure?

Ans. Blood flow can be decreased when the blood vessels become narrow and constricted due to high blood pressure. The blood arteries in your kidneys may no longer function correctly if they have been damaged. When this occurs, the kidneys are unable to eliminate waste such as creatinine, uric acid etc. Increased blood pressure brought on by extra fluid in the blood vessels can set off a deadly loop that worsens the damage and eventually results in renal failure.

  • Q. How is hypertensive kidney disease diagnosed?

Ans. Hypertensive Nephropathy is diagnosed using biochemical tests and the patient's clinical history. Over time, chronic hypertension worsens and damages the kidney. Various blood and urine examinations with imaging studies like USG are done to diagnose hypertensive kidney disorder.

  • Q. How to prevent hypertensive kidney disease?

    Ans.

    • Monitor your blood pressure regularly and reduce sodium intake
    • Schedule a visit to have your blood pressure tested frequently.
    • Keep up a balanced diet. (link)
    • Include daily moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, Yoga Asanas and deep breathing(pranayama) in your routine.

Certain lifestyle measures, exercise, and diet along with ayurvedic medicines are given. Ingredients like gokshura, punarnava, kasni, varuna, etc are nourishing to the nephrons and are diuretics in nature .This makes renal functioning efficient by achieving the main objective of rejuvenation of nephrons.
