Ayurvedic Treatment for Osteoarthritis

We at Dr Dassan’s Ayurveda offer natural treatment for sandhivata patients. Firstly, mild purgation is induced to eliminate the accumulated doshas. Joints are nourished and joint flexibility is improved by practicing abhyanga (massage) on the afflicted parts with herbal oils. To lessen the swelling and balance the aggravated Vata, herbs with anti-inflammatory and Vata balancing effects are used. Patients are made to follow certain practices to reduce further wear and tear of the cartilage and promote its regeneration. Patients are required to lose weight in order to reduce pressure on the joints for which we prescribe an appropriate diet and lifestyle routine. Patients are advised to use appropriate footwear and knee braces to ease the pain, prevent further wear and tear and allow the cartilage to heal and rebuild gradually. As it is a vata disorder, a vata balancing diet and lifestyle has to be followed along with the medications.

About Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disorder that causes damage to the protective cartilage and surrounding tissues that cushion the ends of the bones. This condition is correlated with sandhigata vata in ayurveda, where Sandhi means joints and the aggravated vata gets accumulated in the joints.

Statistics of Osteoarthritis

  • With 32.5 million US individuals affected, osteoarthritis is the most widespread type of arthritis.
  • Women make up 62% of those who have Osteoarthritis.

Risk Factors of Osteoarthritis

  • Any injury or joint trauma
  • Any congenital joint abnormality
  • Commonly affects the elderly population
  • Women are more likely to get affected
  • Being overweight puts pressure on the joints.
  • Family history of osteoarthritis

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Pain during joint movement
  • Joint stiffness after long periods of inactivity
  • Joint tenderness felt on applying pressure
  • Loss of flexibility in the joints
  • Grating sensation while using the joints
  • Bone spurs can form around the affected joints
  • Swelling due to tissue inflammation round the joint

Ayurvedic Causative Fact

  • Consuming meals at irregular timings
  • Trauma due to excessive pressure on the joints
  • Use of unsuitable footwear while running
  • Long term fear, anger, grief & stress.
  • Starving for longer durations
  • Incompatible meal combinations
  • Suppressing natural urges to urinate, cry etc
  • Staying up late at night
  • Intake of food at irregular intervals
  • Exposure to cold winds
  • Speaking very loudly & laughing too much.

All the above factors aggravate Vata.

Ayurvedic Pathogenesis

Vata's nature is rooksha or dry. So, when Vata becomes aggravated it spreads and gets lodged in one or more joints. It eventually degenerates the joint and destroys the articular cartilage by drying up the lubricating synovial fluid inside the joint capsule. Without the proper support of the cartilage, the joint space reduces forcing the bones in that joint to rub against one another and degenerate further.
